Item:382627645820Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Clarke Sharman aged 7 - 1835. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Sarah was just seven years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains three quotations - Deceit discovers a little mind - Praise the Lord - We were not made for ourselves. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a further row of alphabet letters with Fear the Lord stitched beneath and Sarah's details and the date of 1835 stitched across the bottom edge. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with the odd stain and generally rather brown where it looks as though the sampler has been hanging over an open fire for many years. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows that the wool used was originally blue, but this has mellowed to a silvery hue over the years. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage in the lower left corner and visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 9 1/2" x 12" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
