Item:382634843684Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Ann Bowness aged 14 - 1857. Worked in a lustrous thread on cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section is stitched with a central crown flanked by three hearts and a star motif. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with Mary Ann's details and the date of 1857 with a central flower motif beneath. There is a flower basket beneath the flower motif with a star, flower basket plus bird and diamond motif to the left and right. Each star has a lion standing above it then the whole piece is surrounded by a neat floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 13" x 17 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
