Item:382634828277Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Sharp aged 10 - 1802. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Elizabeth was just ten years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central tied floral spray with a rose urn plus bird to the left and a folly/gatehouse building to the right. The rose urn has a tree with bird, crowns and a flower around it, whilst the folly building is surrounded by a tree with squirrel, crown and flower. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a carnation and floral motif at their side with a fruit basket, tree and bird above. There are two birds standing in the foliage of the Tree of Knowledge with a star above them, whilst the top of the tree has two lions standing above it with a floral motif and birds to each side. The bottom section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a rose basket and floral motifs on either side and Elizabeth's details and the date of 1802 beneath Lord give me wisdom to direct my waysI ask not riches nor length of daysMy life's a leaf the time it hath to lastShook with the wind and cropt by every blastElizabeth Sharp ag.d 8 years 1802 Elizabeth's details have a floral motif, dog, duck bird and an owl perched in a tree to the left and a floral motif, dog, goats and owl perched in a tree to the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly paler around the inner edge of the strawberry border where the sampler has been over a stretcher for many years. The colours of the silks are good with some slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage around the folly building, another along the top right side edge and another in the bottom left corner. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 21 3/4" across x 21 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
