Item:382634944921Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Margaret Low Clark aged 10. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly earlier. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section of stitched with two rows of sets of family initials, the first two sets joined by a red heart and a meandering floral border running between both rows. The bottom section of the linen is stitched with a central church with a flower basket, dog and bird on each side which have two crowns and three sets of family initials above. There is a roped area in front of the church with with Margaret's name and age stitched beneath. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges and the colours of the wool are good with some shades not as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. There is also the odd stitch missing here and there and some over stitching on two of the J's in the row of family initials beneath the dividing floral border and a small area in the roof. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it. Measures 16 3/4" across x 16" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
